Jet Sweep Joe
Horse With Milwaukee Ties Tapped to Run Breeders’ Cup Friday
MACC Fund benefits from a win for “Jet Sweep Joe”
All things must align perfectly for a successful jet sweep on the football field. It requires speed and perfect timing, and it was a favorite of Sam Hall, Jr. and his best friend, the late Joe Trawitzki, when they coached high school football together in the Milwaukee area.
Now, it appears all the stars have aligned in the magical journey of “Jet Sweep Joe,” Hall’s thoroughbred racehorse he named for his best friend, as the two-year old colt prepares to run in the Breeders’ Cup World Championship Nov. 1 and 2 at Del Mar Racetrack in Southern California. And in this race, he is taking first-time thoroughbred racehorse owners across Wisconsin along for the ride.
Jet Sweep Joe was foaled on February 10, 2022 – the same day that his namesake, Trawitzki, died from pancreatic cancer, at only 44 years old. Trawitzki introduced Hall to horse racing, and they owned horses together, including their very first purchase – a fractional interest in Belvoir Bay (GB), winner of the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita. Friends since childhood, Hall and Trawitzki each also started their own breeding and racing operations eventually, as well. Hall, along with his husband Aaron, and his sister, Katie Hall Barelmann, founded Hall Stables LLC in 2019. Since that time, they have campaigned several other racehorses in addition to Jet Sweep Joe and they have donated a portion of every horse’s purse to the MACC (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer) Fund.
Hall, of River Hills, is the managing partner of the law firm Crivello, Nichols & Hall in Milwaukee. Barelmann, of Mequon, is the director of sustainability at N-Drip Gravity Micro Irrigation, a global company dedicated to sustainable farming. Both Hall and Trawitzki graduated from Marquette University Law School. As an undergrad, Trawitzki wrestled for UW-Stevens Point.
As Trawitzki battled pancreatic cancer for nearly two years, he approached each day with the charge of ”win the day.” In Trawitzki’s memory, Hall and Barelmann formed Win the Day Racing LLC to offer small fractional ownership interests in Jet Sweep Joe – to allow individuals to buy small ownership interests in the horse (0.125%) so that they could experience being a thoroughbred racehorse owner. They are now off to experience the Breeders’ Cup World Championship.
“Joe wanted to share the thrill of owning a racehorse with as many people as possible – but racehorses are expensive to buy and own in full,” Hall said. “So, shaving off fractional interests is a way to provide that thrill at a manageable price. That’s why Katie and I created Win the Day Racing to provide the ability for dozens of ordinary people to own part of Jet Sweep Joe and hopefully more horses in the future.”
Most of those owner owners are from Wisconsin, but there are some from New Jersey, Arizona, Illinois, Virginia, and Ohio.
Jet Sweep Joe is trained by Paul McEntee, who trained Trawitzki’s racehorses. Irish jockey and current British flat racing Champion Apprentice, Billy Loughnane, will be the jockey. Jet Sweep Joe has drawn the 6th post position and is scheduled to run in the $1 Million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint on Friday, November 1st at 2:45pm PDT / 4:45pm CDT.
About the Breeders’ Cup: Each racing season ends with just one finish line: the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. It’s the two-day, 14-race, year-end culmination that every horse, jockey, trainer, and owner across the globe has in their sights. It all starts with Future Stars Friday, where the sport’s stars of tomorrow compete in five Juvenile (two-year-old) races. The non-stop action continues Saturday where the Breeders’ Cup will crown nine more World Champions across different surfaces and divisions, including the season-defining $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic. This is the 40th year of the Breeders’ Cup World Championship. (from www.breederscup.com)
