Shorewood High School’s Student Council announces its Third Annual “Buzz Cuts For Cancer” charity fundraising event to be held on May 15, 2008 at 3:20 p.m., in Shorewood High’s Arena. Buzz Cuts organizer, David Scott says, “I expect it to be a very fun and successful event. The excitement about doing good for others through Buzz Cuts grows every year. We expect to involve a wide sector of the student body and our goal is to raise about $12,000.”
Buzz Cuts For Cancer was started by two members of the Shorewood Student Council two years ago as a fun way to support the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer or “MACC” Fund.
It works like this:
Some students and teachers volunteer to get their hair buzzed-off in exchange for pledges of money. Professional haircutters volunteer their time to perform the buzz. Lots of people come to witness the buzz.
After getting their hair buzzed, the student collects the pledges and turns the money over to the Student Council for donation to the MACC Fund.
Additional funds are raised by selling T-Shirts designed for the event. The Student Council tallies the collections and announces the total donation, which was more than $10,000 in 2007, a record of which the entire school is proud but hopes to beat.
David Scott, a Shorewood Sophomore says, “I am proud to carry on this tradition of giving and hope to expand this worthwhile event to all the high schools in the North Shore. Those of us who are not afflicted by cancer know that hair loss is only a symptom of the cancer treatment. We hope that by Buzzing our hair we can help fund a cure for cancer and prevent the stress and grief it brings to the cancer victims and their families.”
